Snow Investigations

While the snow is here let's make the most of it. Here are some snow investigations that you can carry out at home. Can everyone please do at least 1 investigation, but feel free to do more.

1 - Where is the snow the deepest? For this investigation you need to find different area's where snow has fallen, and measure the depth of the snow. make sure you make a note of the places you measure. Answer these questions - Q - where was the deepest snow? - Q - where was the shallowest snow? - Q - why do you think the deepest snow is where it is?

2 - How long will it take for snow to melt inside? Fill up a container with snow right to the very top and bring it into your house, make sure you put it somewhere sensible. Next, you need to decide how often you are going to look at the snow... every 5/10/15/20/30 minutes etc. Each time you look at the snow make a note about if it has defrosted a little or not. Make sure you know what time you brought the snow in, and what time it melted! Answer these questions - Q - how long do you think it will take for the snow to melt? - Q - how could you have made the snow stay frozen for longer?

3 - Where will the snow keep coldest? Get 3 or 4 small containers and fill them up with snow. Now, put the containers in different places, eg inside your house, burried in snow, in the fridge, near the window, in the shed etc. Every hour you need to get and look at all your containers and make notes about if they are melting or not. answert these questions. - Q - which place do you think will melt the snow the quickest and why? - Q - which place do you think will keep the snow the coldest and why? - Q - which place was the coldest/hottest?

4 - Are there different layers of snow? Find a nice empty patch of snow. Get a teaspoon (ask your grown up first) and start digging a little hole in the snow and answer these questions - Q - is the snow on the top the same as the snow right next to the ground? - describe your answer - Q - Why do you think there are different layers of snow? - Q - can you draw a picture of the different layers of snow eg hard, icy, slushy, soft. (with labels)

If you think of another investigation and you would like to carry that out as well please do so.

Have fun and stay safe,

Miss Robinson

Things to be doing while school is closed because of the snow!

I hope you are all well and having lots of fun in the snow. I am putting a few tasks on here to do with our topics in school, so we don't get too behind with our work.

Literacy

Our topic is stories that raise issues/dilemas

- Can you think of a traditional fairy tale that raises an issue or a dilema? Examples could be Hanzel and Gretel, 3 Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rumpolestiltskin etc. When you have thought of one, could you write down the main parts of the story - no more that 6 sentences. Next could you write down the issue or dilema that occurs in the story and how this makes the main character feel.

Science

Our topic is separating mixtures of materials

- Look at the list of different materials below. Cany you find 3 items from home that are made of this material? You can record this however you like, but there needs to be 3 items for each material (with pictures). Next could you write down why that material has been used for that object. For example - Wood - Table - because it is strong and hard.

Here is the list - wood, metal, plastoc, glass, cloth, paper, cardboard, stone

Stay safe

 Year 3/4 Residential

Years 3 and 4 started the term with a residential visit to Shropshire. The children began their adventures at the Cardingmill Valley, pond dipping and hiking.

Cardingmill Valley

They walked the pipe-walk ...

And all the fresh air wore them out ...

The next day, they went to Enginuity and made some pneumatic monsters
