Visit to Shortwood Farm, April 2015

On Wednesday 29th April, Nursery went on a trip to Shortwood Farm with 23 children and 12 adults with the intention of learning about baby animals.  The weather was kind to us in the end as rain had been forecast, but it turned into a sunny spring day instead. After an exciting, bumpy coach journey, we were met by Janet the Farm owner who gave us a safety brief of the farm. We then set up camp in one of the rooms on the farm and went off to feed the pigs, hens, ducks and rabbits.

We collected warm eggs from the hens and watched four pigs having a race around the track! So many excited children screaming ‘come on piggies’ hoping this would spur the pigs on to complete the race course. After lunch and a bit of a warm up we set off on a tractor ride through a field of cows to meet Amos, a huge bull! Thankfully, we were behind bars on the trailer because he was enormous and very strong! We ended the day by milking Holly the cow, feeding the ravenous goats and petting the chicks, rabbits and baby guinea pigs. After a thorough hand washing we said goodbye and thank you and set off back to school; half the children promptly fell asleep on the coach after a day in the fresh air.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who came with us; we couldn’t have done it without you!
