Nursery Leavers’ Ceremony

On Thursday 10th July, 2014 mums and dads, grannies and granddads, teachers and children gathered together in the school hall to celebrate the end of an era. A mass of Good Luck balloons lined the stage with a big banner leading the way through a symbolic doorway to Class 1. The Nursery children took great delight in showing their audience two of our warm up songs for PE, followed by our favourite action packed Doo-Bee-Dah song. After vigorous applause we then moved to the tear-jerking part of the goodbyes, done through the story of The Enormous Turnip. Each of the Nursery children came to join us on the stage as their names were called and their strengths acknowledged and between them they managed to pull up the Enormous Turnip by working as a team. What a great team they were and will continue to be through school. As each of the children skipped off through the doors, ready for the next part of their journey we presented them with their Learning Journeys and Transition Reports as keep sakes of their time with us. Unlike most nurseries we still get to see them in school in September and are in a privileged position to follow their continued journey with interest and so it wasn’t really goodbye at all, simply au revoir - until we meet again.......

The ceremony was then followed by a much less formal Teddy Bears picnic on the school field, complete with lots of yummy food, provided by the FOCS team and Donna Porter, pony rides provided by the Mannings at Birch Farm and games with the Nursery staff. The sun shone and parents were able to meet with one another and get to know each other before September.

The only tricky part was trying to explain to the children that they still had to come back to Nursery for the last week before the summer holidays, which they thought was strange, since we had just sent them all off to Mrs Jones in Class 1! Thank goodness for adjacent classrooms where we spent the last week all playing together.
